What is a kinesiological tape, also called a Kinesio tape?

Kinesio tapes were developed by the Japanese chiropractor Kenzo Kase in the early 1970s and manufactured in collaboration with the Nitto Denko company. The aim was to expedite the healing process of sports injuries by supporting functional movements instead of completely immobilizing parts of the body. Today kinesiological tapes are used for a much wider range of treatments. The goals are, for example to relieve pain, reduce swelling or improve general body functions. Kinesio taping is a term used to describe the application of kinesiological tape strips onto the skin. The tapes from K-Active® meet the highest quality standards and consist of a stretchy cotton fabric and an adhesive coating. They are hypoallergenic and 100 % latex-free and are used daily by numerous therapists and in sports and competitive sports.

Note on terms: The term “kinesio tape” is now protected by company law and is sold under the brand of the same name. Since the name is generally used very often as an abbreviation for the group of kinesiological tapes, we also use this term on our website to facilitate language. The term kinesio tape/taping always means on our website kinesiology tape/ kinesiological taping.

What are kinesio tapes used for?

Kinesio tapes are used every day in sports as well as in therapy and medicine to support the self-healing powers. Therapists and doctors use them for pain problems, physical overloads, after injuries and surgeries and to optimize other therapy methods. It's about rehabilitating the patient or athlete more quickly and to prevent injuries. User expect, among other things, an improvement in blood circulation and muscle and joint function, a reduction in muscle tension and pain as well as tissue relief and an improvement in lymph drainage.

How do kinesio tapes work?

The aim of kinesiological treatments is to support the body's own regulation and self-healing and to optimize the therapy results. With this therapy method it is important to conduct a holistic examination (= "assessment"). We at K-Active® have developed a precise assessment, which is the result of decades of practical kinesiology. The nice thing about the theoretical basic model is that it is confirmed again and again by direct feedback from the body. The treating therapist uses a muscle test to set a sensory stimulus which simulates the effects of the tape. The stimuli perceived as positive by the body define the key points (local or remote) and the type of tape application. This approach has a clear advantage over the purely standardized method, because the body knows its needs in order to heal itself. In order to achieve optimal therapy results, kinesio tapes should be applied by a trained doctor or therapist. Alternatively, self-users should learn the examination method correctly beforehand.

It all depends on the right application technique: In order to be successful in kinesiological treatment, a patient-specific application technique is required. To do this, some muscle tests are done first. While the athlete or patient is performing a painful or restricted movement, the therapist uses his hands to transmit various stimuli to the body. The stimuli, which, for example, lead to a reduction in pain or a greater range of motion, form the basis for the tape application: the therapist applies the tape in such a way that it imitates the optimal stimulus. In order for that, the tape does not have to be applied automatically on the painful area. Often the triggers for pain or other problems are located in other parts of the body.

K-Active® Taping consists of several parts. Usually most therapeutic applications done by a doctor or therapist are based on the holistic assessment (see above). The use of K-Active® Tape complements these treatments to improve the results. The key to optimal results of K-Active® Taping is the interaction and interlocking of all therapeutic components.

What is the difference between sports tapes and Kinesio tapes?

In the past, joints and muscles were extremely limited by casts or similar rigid bandages after injuries and it is now known that this only makes sense in a few cases.

The development of sports tapes was the first step in the right direction. Sports tapes support injured structures without restricting mobility too much. Partial movements and therefore important functional freedoms of the affected body parts are retained. Circulation and neuromuscular interconnections are activated. New structures develop according to their function. Rigid sports tape (also called “white tape” or “McConnell tape”) was and still is used successfully for this type of taping.

Kinesio tape, on the other hand, is based on the strength, weight and elasticity of human skin. This second “positive” skin generates sensory information. According to applied kinesiological practice, these should help the body to achieve more muscle strength, better circulation, increased lymph flow, optimized cuti-visceral reflexes (skin-intestinal reflexes) and other processes. Experience has shown that due to the properties of the material and when applied correctly, the tape is quickly no longer perceived as disturbing. Activities of daily life such as work, sport and leisure can be carried out almost without any restriction by the tape and are encouraged, which not least has a very positive effect on the psyche. The water-repellent material of kinesiology tapes also makes it possible to shower, bathe or visit the sauna without any problems.

Use and areas of application of kinesio tapes

Decades of therapeutic experience show that kinesiological taping as part of a consecutive therapy treatment can lead to significant success. It is therefore applied by many users in prophylaxis, pain problems and post-operative and post-traumatic conditions. The areas of application include, for example, orthopedics, sports physiotherapy, lymphology, neurology, internal medicine, gynecology and obstetrics, pediatrics as well as cancer and wound therapy.

According to doctors and therapists, Kinesio tapes are used on a daily basis for the following indications:

  • Sports injuries, restrictions in mobility, functional dysfunctions
  • Pain and muscle tension
  • Spinal column/intervertebral disc problems, osteoarthritis, sciatica, ISG problems, poor posture
  • Headache and migraine
  • Epicondylitis, carpal tunnel syndrome
  • lymphedema
  • paralysis
  • polyneuropathy
  • menstrual problems
  • Recovery and aftercare after childbirth, urinary incontinence and much more.

Goals of kinesio taping

The main goal of kinesio taping is to support the body's performance and healing processes. This requires the technically correct application of kinesiological tapes.

Users with years of experience are of the opinion that kinesio tapes promote the body's self-healing powers. Furthermore, they also support and optimize joint functions. In addition, users report that kinesio taping leads to improved neural networking. This can contribute to an improvement in proprioception and muscular triggering.

Kinesiological taping is therefore a possible basis for injury prevention and performance enhancement in sports and for faster healing after injuries or surgeries.

The holistic approach of K-Active® in practice

Everything is interlinked: The human body contains a variety of connections between different structures (skin, fascia, muscles, meridians, etc.). The holistic approach to this forms the therapeutic basis of K-Active® Taping.

For example, a treatment on the chest and stomach can contribute to the general improvement of the body systems ("body conditioning"). In addition, they can serve as the basis for auto reparative processes in the human body. If necessary, local applications in the area of the disturbed structures can be added. The correctness of the application must be confirmed by repeatedly performing the first tests.

Meeting natural needs: Doctors and therapists who use it explain the positive results of K-Active® Taping by supporting various functions in the body. If you have "questioned" the body with the help of the assessment prior to application, you are following the natural needs of the body. Experience has shown that therapy failure or problems with a kinesiological tape application are extremely unlikely.

Quick effect: The main effect of the K-Active® Taping is expected in the first three to five days after application. Medical staff also observe the positive effects with regard to the symptoms after a longer period of use. Allergic reactions are only registered in rare cases. These often arise from previous or current medication or from increased alcohol and nicotine consumption. In these cases, the skin takes on its additional function as an “organ of excretion of toxins” and reacts more sensitively to the tape. Incorrect application techniques can also lead to negative reactions from the body. For this reason, trained healthcare professionals should apply the tape. Alternatively, the patient or athlete should receive adequate training.

An overview of the different kinesiological tapes from K-Active®

K-Active® Tape Classic: The K-Active® Tape Classic is the first kinesiological tape that was ever developed. It was first produced by Nitto Denko company in Japan over 30 years ago. It was and still is the all-rounder for all applications uses and the best-selling tape from K-Active®.

K-Active® Tape Gentle: Nitto Denko has developed a new type of adhesive technology for particularly sensitive skin: The STRATAGEL® adhesive is used for K-Active® Tape Gentle and K-Active® Tape Elite. When the tape is removed, it dissolves itself so that only a few skin particles stick to it. The adhesive is hypoallergenic. It is recommended for children, elderly patients, applications for chronic wounds, cancer and lymph problems as well as on the face and after injuries and surgeries. But the STRATAGEL® adhesive is also particularly suitable for the new method of face and beauty taping.

K-Active® Tape Sport: The K-Active® Tape Sport closes the gap between the classic sports tape and the kinesiological tape. It has a slightly lower elasticity than the before mentioned K-Active® tapes. Nevertheless, it is suitable for any kinesiological tape application. The low price is just another advantage of the Tape Sport.

K-Active® Elite: The currently most versatile and high-performance K-Active® tape, which combines the best characteristics of all kinesiological tapes and, thanks to STRATGEL® adhesive, offers maximum performance even for sensitive skin. It sticks for a particularly long time and is also the perfect choice for high-performance athletes.

K-Active® Tape PreCuts: The K-Active® Tape PreCuts, cut into X, Y and fan shapes, are made from the proven material of the K-Active® Tape Classic. They save a lot of time and perfectly top off the assortment for a wide range of needs. For quick application, the K-Active® Tape PreCuts should not be missing in any sports bag, medicine cabinet or practice.

Contraindications and "Red Flags"

Please do not use kinesiology tape on open wounds and lesions. The tape should also not be used by severely irritated skin or allergies or, for example, with non-decompensated heart problems.

If you have sensitive skin, you should attach a small test strip (for example on your forearm) to check compatibility.

A wide variety of applications are also possible during pregnancy, but this area of application should be viewed as a "red flag": the selection and application of the tape should be handled very carefully.

K-Active® tape techniques

We teach and use the following tape techniques at K-Active®:

  • Muscle technique
  • Ligament technique
  • Fascia technique
  • Correction technique
  • Lymph technique
  • Re-ballooning technique
  • Hug technique
  • "Full recover Criss Cross"

Everyone is an individual and no day is like the previous one. Physical demands, functions and problems change every day. It is therefore necessary to keep “asking” the body about the current situation. Accordingly, therapeutic measures are defined and implemented together with the patient and his body. The assessment (= diagnosis) specifies which technique is used and where the tape is applied. The so-called long-distance effect must also be taken into account.

Example of long-distance effect: pain in the right shoulder could be caused by an appendix scar (mechanically or via the meridians). Influences from the liver (skin-intestinal reflex) or the cervical spine (radiation via the nerves) can also be the cause. In such cases, a purely local application usually does not lead to a fundamental improvement to the condition. First the long-distance effect and then any remaining local effect must be eliminated. This is the only way to achieve a successful and long-term therapy result.

Hints and tips around Kinesio taping

Cleanse the skin before applying. It should be dry and free of grease.

It is advisable to shave hairy areas of the body in order not to compromise the adhesive effect of the tape. Alternatively, the hair can be fixed to the skin with a spray adhesive; this is often used in sports.

During application, fingers should not come into contact with the adhesive, as this can reduce the adhesive effect.

When applying a kinesiological tape, it is important to "activate" the adhesive by gently rubbing the tape. This ensures better adhesive properties and a longer application time.

The application technique should be learned correctly and the tape should always be applied according to the individual needs of the patient or athlete.

Since the tape changes the sensory system of the body, the tape should be applied approximately one hour before starting any sporting activity.

All kinesiological tapes from K-Active® are water-repellent and hardly absorb any moisture from the outside. After showering or bathing, the tape dries by itself. Alternatively, it can be carefully dabbed with a towel (do not rub!) or dried with a hairdryer.

The application time of the tape is on average three to five days. Experience has shown that significantly longer application times are possible with the optimal body location and technique.

When removing the tape, you should always proceed slowly and carefully so as not to cause skin irritation.

Kinesio taping in the veterinary field

The K-Active® team is also active in the veterinary sector: our specialized veterinary instructors developed their own course concepts in this area very early on. In numerous courses around the world the knowledge was passed on to interested veterinarians and therapists.

In addition, we are pioneers in reading about kinesiology taping on animals. Our veterinary instructor Carolin Caprano wrote two books about taping for horses and dogs, which are now bestsellers in our online shop.

Furthermore, we are currently developing a kinesiological tape, which we are adapting to the special requirements in the veterinary field. Thereby, optimal results should also be achieved there.
