What are trigger points?
Sarcomeres are the smallest unit of skeletal muscle responsible for muscle contraction and elongation. Myofascial trigger points are hyperexcitable sites in the muscle fibers that can trigger pain when pressure is applied (latent trigger points) or movement/rest is applied (active trigger points), and active trigger points can also trigger pain in other areas of the body (referred pain). Trigger points can occur due to muscular overuse, misuse, or injury to the muscles. Due to the "overstimulation", the sarcomeres can shorten and exert influence on the muscle fibers. The resulting tension can impair blood flow and oxygen supply to the muscles, contributing to the formation of trigger points. This results in thickening, which can be noticeable as small elevations (myofascial energy weak points).
